Definition

Netiquette is a combination of “network” and “etiquette” and it refers to the set of social conventions, rules, and guidelines of respectful and appropriate behavior when communicating and interacting on the internet

 

Rules of Netiquette

·         Remember the  Human:  Everything you read or write online is seen by real people with feelings. Follow the golden rule and treat others as you would like to be.

·         Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life: Be ethical and lawful. Your online conduct should be no less respectful than your in person conduct

·         Know where you are in cyberspace: Netiquette varies from one online community to another “Lurk” first to get a feel for the local culture

·         Respect other people’s time and bandwidth: Keep your post and emails concise and to the point. Don’t waste other’s time by posting irrelevant or excessively large content

·         Make yourself look good online: Pay attention to the quality of your writing. Use proper grammar and spelling, be clear and logical, and be pleasant and polite.

·         Share expert knowledge: The strength of the internet lies in its wealth of information. Share what you know and help others when possible.

·         Help keep flame wars under control: A flame war is a prolonged exchange of angry or abusive messages. Do not feed the fire; instead try to redirect  the discussion in a more productive direction

·         Respect other people’s privacy: Do not read or forward others private emails or messages. Do not share personal information about others without their consent

·         Do not abuse your power: If you have more power or knowledge than others, do not take advantage of them.

         

             forgiving of other people’s mistakes: Everyone was new once, and people sometimes make errors. Be patient and polite when pointing out a mistake, preferably in private
